Cherished [Brampyre remix]
by Melissa de Zwart
The girl I hang out with sometimes is the colour of dried blood.
She is dry and cool; she smells of chemicals and is stiff to the touch.
She flaunts shiny red nails and unhealthy sunless skin. (I overheard a mutual friend make an unflattering comment about her steel blue veins.)
She is not the type to sunbathe.
Her eye make up is always uneven.
Her hair is waist length, shiny and brown.
She wears ragged goth-inspired borrowed coats. This is not a fashion statement, she does buy some biker jeans.
She is easily distracted.
When she dances or argues she grows a new silver tooth,
She smiles,
And leaves behind a smear of pinkish perspiration.
And yet, when she checked her reflection in my bathroom mirror…
She only laughed.
