Her gothic-inspired eye-makeup is always uneven; it is only that she is easily distracted and so will forget to apply a second coat of mascara on one eye or blend the liner on the other. From a distance it looks fine, like she is the type to flaunt a retro-blue-frosted left eye and a charcoaled right. But up close the imbalance is off-putting; this is not a fashion statement.

A tan would disguise her steel-blue veins but she is not the type to sunbathe nor is she a woman familiar with salon treatments. She leaves her topless disposable razors in the soap dish and my tweezers on the basin.

Her hair is black rose, the colour of dried blood beneath moonlight. It smells of chemicals and is stiff to the touch. In a photo I took on her sixteenth birthday it is waist length, shiny and brown. I begged her not to cut it but she only laughed.

When she argues, dancing around the topic of sex, she grows a perspiration moustache and sweat coats her forehead, even if the rest of her remains dry and cool.

I fantasise I have poisoned her when she steals a bite from my apple and leaves behind a pink smear of blood in the flesh around the circumference of the bite-mark like a radiating areolae.

I suggested she didn’t inherit my genes after I overheard a handsome young prince make an unflattering comment about the size of her backside, but she just said she always knew she was adopted. Alas, the angry lines her childbirth left on my belly remind me she’s mine.

All this, yet when she checks her reflection in the mirror on the wall, asks it, “Who’s the fairest of them all?” she smiles like she already knows what the answer will be.
